Smiles from Heaven is a non-profit organization devoted to nurturing community spirit and delivering comfort through culinary traditions. Established in loving memory of founder Lisa McGuire’s son, Stephen, and her grandmother, this charity serves as a testament to their legacies by spreading joy and support through home-baked goods.
How it all started
When Lisa was a little girl and her Grandma was the crosswalk guard for the school, every day after school, all the kids from the school would run to the crosswalk. Once Grandma took them to the other side, they got a freshly baked cookie. This is where the idea of cookies came from. Nobody loved Grandma’s cookies more than Stephen.
Working along with Nestara Society for Community Wellness, when the anniversary of Grandma and Stephen’s death was approaching, Lisa decided she wanted to do something to memorialize her Grandma and son, Stephen. Thus, Smiles from Heaven Cookie Foundation was born. Grandma and Stephen died on the same day, just two years apart.
Nestara Society for Community Wellness is a non-profit organization based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Established with a deep-rooted belief in the power of community, we are dedicated to fostering a safe, resilient, and equitable environment for all members of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. At Nestara, we recognize that personal wellness is intricately connected to the well-being of the community as a whole, challenging systemic prejudice and barriers in solidarity with our community.
In partnership with Nestara (Society for Community Wellness), Smiles from Heaven plays a crucial role in community outreach. Our monthly barbecues, where over 1,000 people gather, feature an array of delectable treats, including cookies, brownies, and banana bread—all crafted from cherished family recipes by Mama Lisa herself. These sweets, affectionately known as “cookies of love,” are not only handed out at events but also sold to fund Nestara’s vital initiatives aimed at alleviating hunger and eventually providing housing solutions for the homeless.
Smiles from Heaven is dedicated to reminding everyone that they are loved, baking entirely by donation without any personal compensation.
